Did you see all that stuff in the press in 1996 about how Newport was the 'New Seattle' on account of having
quite a few good bands? Well this has nothing to do with all the PR rubbish, but is a celebration of those
self-same bands, plus quite a few more. It's all varieties of indie, but it covers the board from dreamy Lush-esque
musings to flat-out punk and metal. As far as I can tell, Helen Love's Beat Him Up is the same version as on the single, hence no lyrics here. If you want 'em, follow the link in the track listing. The second band-related feature is that the Teen Anthems song which opens the album provides the quote that opens these homepages. Interesting, huh? So what of the rest of the album? Pretty good, to be honest. Parc Troli provide a passable Green Day / Lookout! Records imitation. Catatonia do one of their mellower moments, with Cerys proving once again she's one of the few people in rock that can actually sing, rather than shout in tune. Suzy Pepper deliver a lightweight but incredibly catchy indie pop moment and Flyscreen provide the comic relief not so much for their Fugazi-style hardcore but for the chorus line "I laugh out loud at snowbunny". What's that all about, eh? The Manics track, by the way, is an old one from their New Art Riot EP - coincidentally released on Damaged Goods. |
