| More info: | The last single on Damaged Goods celebrated the DIY ethic so beloved of underground bands, but not in the usual po-faced style so
perfectly ridiculed by Kenickie's Punka. Controversy time - this single could have been a chart hit but Damaged Goods supposedly
completely messed up the distribution and it got nowhere. To be exact (and I do like to be), it made the giddy heights of number 152
on 22 June 1996. This, I've heard, was one of the main reasons why Helen Love decided to find a new record label. The Girl About Town originally appeared on the Astral Angora 7" compilation and ranked high in John Peel's Festive 50 for 1996. We Love You also featured another previously released track in the shape of Punk Boy 1 - I guess it was put on here after hundreds of Ash fans had besieged Damaged Goods asking how they could get hold of it. I'd really like someone to tell me what the 'MC5s' reference is all about in The Girl About Town. I know it's a band, but that doesn't fit the lyrics, so I thought it might be a nightclub in Swansea, but that doesn't exactly make sense either. So what is it? |
